Q: Why does it look like there are dark stains on my shingles? A: Some possible causes of dark staining include mildew, fungus or algae growth which is caused when the roofing remains wet long after rain storms, due to the area of roof being kept in the shade for most of the day. A more severe cause would be Granule Loss due to the age of the shingle. Granules are your shingles' UV protection, and without them the shingles' life will be dramatically shortened. Q: My shingles have begun to curl and crack. Can this be repaired? A: Unfortunately, when your shingles have begun to curl or crack it means the shingles have reached the end of their useful life and will need to be replaced. It is a good idea to inspect your roof from the ground or have a professional contractor inspect your roof at least once a year to prevent the shingles from getting to this point; typically there is damage to the roof's sheathing when shingles have reached this point, and will actually cause roofing replacement costs to be higher due the additional repair costs for the replacement roof sheathing. |
